CASHLESS SUBSIDY PROGRAM

Greetings Square Community,

We've received Direct Marketing from Square regarding the CASHLESS SUBSIDY PROGRAM. It looks like some kind of program in conjunction with the Japanese government. Some benefits are: a free Square Reader; a reduced processing fee and 5% back to your customers (all within a set promotion period).

I've seen the page in English describing all this, but I don't understand the:

"Give your customers 5% back in savings when they use a cashless payment at your business."

Where does this 5% come from? Is it something our business pays, like a discount, or is it something Square pays? Will we be out of pocket?

Thanks!

Chazawa.

Hi @Chazawa

The Cashless Subsidy Program, as you mentioned is a Government subsidy program. The 5% back that consumers/customers will be receiving is coming from the government through their cashless method’s issuer (i.e. Credit Card company, E-money etc.). Please keep in mind that the companies (issuers etc.) also have to be registered for the consumers to get their 5% back. As for who will over the 5%, it is the government and the issuers, so businesses will not be paying anything out of pocket.

How the customers will get their 5% back is up to the card issuer as well. It could return to them as points or as cashback. For further details regarding the points back or cashback, please contact the issuers.

Thank you.
