Now that some Chromebooks (such as the Asus Chromebook Flip) are able to run Android apps, is it possible to use the Square app and card readers on these devices? Anyone try this yet?

Unfortunately not. You can find compatible devices here https://squareup.com/compatibility but they do need to be true mobile devices (phones or tablets).

We use a chromebook with the square app as an emergency POS when the line is long. we have to manually type in credit cards but we don't have to use it often.
The credit card swiper works on my Chromebooks. I couldn't get the chip reader to connect via bluetooth even though the Chromebooks could pair with it. Still, I can swipe credit cards on my Chromebooks now which is nice. I've confirmed the credit card swiper works on two models of Chromebook I own. Your mileage may vary as I'm sure it's not officially supported yet.
