Feature Request: Customize category icons, and add photos to categories like items

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Can you apply pictures for categories?

Would LOVE to be able to add a picture to each Category I create. I see we can add a picture for items but not for categories. Could you send a request for a future update for this? Would make our Square Register screen so much nicer and prettier. Thank you.

Re: Pictures for Categories

Hello @ryanwnzl

I know this thread has been around the sun a couple of times now. I've gone ahead and reached out to our Item Library Product Manager for an update. Currently this request is on the backlog and we're not expecting it to be implemented anytime soon. I understand this isn't the answer a lot of sellers want to hear, but I want to be as transparent as possible.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when prioritizing feature requests - comments like all of yours on this thread are one of the big inputs our product teams take into consideration. However, there are other things to consider as well -  build time, engineering bandwidth, and cost to name a few, as well as balancing this request with others that may take up time from the same engineering group.

I know there are 8 pages of comments about this issue, and it is a lot. Some of these factors like engineering bandwidth are less visible to you all, which is why I wanted to give a little insight into some of the behind-the-scenes work.

Thank you for your patience, and understanding - our eng teams are working on other features that we hope make POS even better for you. If we have updates on this thread, we'll post them here. Just called customer service- apparently after two years of this request it still has not been deemed important enough to work on

😡

I just started with square POS and visual categories was my first step. Turns out it has been requested for 2 years now. Very disappointing start.

This post is now 2 years old and still no news about adding images to catagories.

It seems Square is doing well as a business, this seems like a highly requested feature and not difficult impliment.

What am I missing here?

I am just starting with Square POS and this is a disturbing beginning!

Ryan

Still "holding tight" this post is from a year and a half ago for waht seems to be a simple and highly requested feature.

At what point would it be considered "letting us down"?

Any updates currently?

Hey @ryanwnzl, welcome to the seller community and sorry for the frustration.

I went to check on this but there are not any developments that I can share out. So that I can surface more specifics with our Point of Sale team, can you let me know a bit more about your ideal setup relating to categories, and if your sales will be primarily in-person or online?

If you're going to be using Point of Sale to process payments in-person, you still can edit the color of the category buttons and arrange them on your grid pages for efficiency's sake. More details on how to set these up here:

I hope this helps get you closer to where you need to be—please don't hesitate to let us know if anything else comes up.

@Tom-

Thank you very much for the response!

The request has been to add images for catagories for 2 years now. Although I am not a programmer, I find it hard to believe this is uber challenging as the items already feature this option.

My employees previously used your app from the mobile phones for jobs outside of our shop.  We have a new larger location and started using the full Square register with POS for in-person purchase.  We would like it to be easy to navigate for new employees.

Thank you for the links, but they do not address the concern.  My ideal setup would be a grid array of image icons that when selected shows the items images (items already exists).

This seams to be a common & straightforward request that has been outstanding for 2 years.

Is there a timeline?

Got it. Thanks for laying that out, @ryanwnzl. We don't have access to a timeline for this request, but I will point out to our Point of Sale team that adding images to the category button will help your employees' navigation. In addition, I'll mention that an additional level of organization would be useful for finding and drilling down to the item that's up for purchase.

Possibly another option to consider, I wanted to point out that you can add up to five grid screens and use them as a category, so to speak. For example, you could assign a category name to each grid page and specify your most popular items as appropriate. I apologize that I do not have a better workaround at this time—if any other options become available, we'll share them on this thread. 💯

I too would love to have this feature and I am also quite disapointed to see that this request is 2 years in the running and still no update. With the release of the Register POS system, this should have been a given addition... Please add this ASAP!

Thanks
