Is there a free version of POS?

We're buying a small seasonal business and the former owner used square on his ipad air for his register (POS).  He says it's free and when I search on yahoo I can find where it says free but when I go to the link it eventually ends up on a page saying it is $60.00 a month.

I don't mind the $60.00 a month but there might also be an occasional one day event that I can set up for and I'd need to be able to have access to the software then also.

Just wondering if someone can clarify if there is in fact a free version that can be used.

Square POS is free. They make their cut on the processing fees of credit cards. Also if your business is big enough, $250,000 and up you can negotiate a better credit card fee. 

Square for retail is a new app that has more detailed inventory management and employee management built in but costs $60 a month per register. 

99% of people are using the free app, we do and it is great.
