How do I troubleshoot my reader?

[The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Reader not working]

 

I have had my reader for less than six months but it already says get a new reader when I try to pair it.  Should this device last more than six months?

To make sure I can provide a few troubleshooting steps, what reader are you using, and what mobile phone/tablet do you use to take payments?
