Point of Sale: Alphanumeric Keyboard for Coupon Redemption
Point of Sale: Alphanumeric Keyboard for Coupon Redemption

Hello Seller Community!

I'm reaching out with an update from our Point of Sale team — there's a small change coming up with the Redeem Rewards function.

What's new?

In the next few days, when using the Square POS app to redeem a customer’s coupon, you may notice the keyboard that appears now includes letters as well as numbers. Square is switching to alphanumeric coupons (like 5AC46D) instead of purely numeric (123456), so we’ve modified this keyboard to include letters, too.

Why is this happening?

There are two good reasons for our shift to alphanumeric coupons. The first is that allowing both numbers and letters to be used in auto-generated coupons greatly reduces the chance of you ever running out of unique coupon codes to issue. The second reason is that just like a web password, using a mix of letters and numbers is far more secure because it’s tougher to guess.

This new keyboard should appear automatically sellers currently on app versions older than 4.77 (meaning it has not been updated since 2017), will need to update the app for the keyboard to appear. The method of redeeming coupons is otherwise the same.

Hope you find this context useful! Please let us know if you have any questions.
