How Can You Verify Customer Not Using Stolen Card?

Have an out of state client that wants to purchase a high dollar item from me. How can I be sure they are legitimate and not using a stolen card? I don't want to send the item and find out afterwards it was a fraudulent transaction and I am out said item.
