As part of the Seller Community’s First Birthday, we wanted to highlight a few of our Community Super Sellers. These folks are some of our top contributors in the community, helping out other businesses with technical help and business advice.
Today we’ll be hearing from Nikki and Bob from Van Kalker Farms. I asked them a few questions about their business. If you want to know more, feel free to comment on this post!
Tell us a little about your business.
- Van Kalker Farms has been in business since 1961. It began as a produce business, and eventually plants were added to our offerings. We've been in our current location since 1993, growing the business since then from a few small greenhouses to nearly 3 acres of growing space. Our garden center is open April through June, and we sell produce at farmers markets June through October. We also sell large amounts of both plants and produce to other local retailers. Before local produce is ready in the Chicagoland area, we travel to Kentucky twice a week with our semi to buy produce grown by Amish and sold at an auction.
When did you start using Square?
- We've been using Square POS since 2013 and used just the credit card processing for a year or two before that.
What do you know now that you wish you would have known on day 1 of starting your business?
- We bought and took over the business as the next generation in 2014. Having grown up in the business, we knew a lot of things that we wanted to change when it became ours. The most important thing is having reliable staff who are dedicated to our business and customers.
What questions can you help with in the community?
- As users of POS/Register primarily, questions related to that product are easiest for us to answer - including getting set up with your bank account and items, and concerns about fees. We often do a little research into other products to help answer questions though.
