Accept PIN Transactions (debit)

Accept PIN Transactions (debit)

Why doesnt square take pin trasaction when using debit cards, Instead it always runs as credit. Customers dont want to show ID when paying debit. Will the new square register from (Square) be compatible for pin based debit cards. Will square ever make this feature happen, Many Square customers have asked for it. For my slef its a needed feature. My customers are old School, Close minded. They want pin based card transactions.

Re: Is there an option for customer to choose debit or credit after swiping?

You can absolutely accept debit cards with Square, and they're run just like credit cards (no pin required). Debit cards are processed with the same flat per transaction rates.

currently, in the US all transactions run as credit, but I did see that the newly added debit in Canada is pin based so maybe there is hope.

Square has been making an aggresive push into other countries, and in many other countries EMV transactions are all Chip and Pin and Chip and Signature is basically non-existant. So they will have to continue to deveop pin entry for both EMV cards as well as debit cards as they continue to push into other markets where that is the norm. I belive the pin debit in Canada, Square recieved an exemption for the time being to use pin on glass.  Many of the other Pin on screen, ( a non dedicated keypad entry device), hardware applications out there in the United States are on hardware devices that are locked down such as Clover, Poynt and NCR Quantum. Clover for instance has had to strip out its web browser to be able to provide this functionality.  That being said I think there is hope in the future for pin on glass on Square's register since Square's Register fits the same bill as the other hardware devices, however I would be suprised to see pin on glass available for use on Ipad and Android apps anywhere in the near future( in the United States).

Are there ways to make customers enter a pin in the case they have to swipe their card to ensure better security? Also,do you have a way to have the customer select whether they are using credit or debit?

Hey @Questions04 - Looks like @Sean answered your question on this thread.

I've merged you to it so you can take a look!

Thank you

What if they use their debit card and no pin is required and later they open dispute saying I have not used my card and pin was not required.

Hello @AXOL,

Great to see you posting in the Seller community for the first time, welcome! 😁

I do understand that that accepting Credit/debit cards also welcomes the possibility of a dispute/chargeback. The reality here is, regardless of payment processor, and whether a pin is utilized or not, this is a risk that unfortunately goes hand in hand with acceptance of credit and debit cards as a payment option.

Likewise, as consumers, both you and I are able to dispute any charge we recognize as fraudulent, or for services rendered not meeting stated expectations. The Fair Credit Billing Act provides a good overview as to why this Federally protected consumer law is put into place.

The good news here is that we have some best practices on how to possibly reduce the likelihood of a dispute.  Are you familiar with our Risk manager?
Im not certain if you utilize your Square online store for your line of business, but this is a great tool that essentially helps detect potential fraud for online payments.

I hope I was able to provide you a good overview in relation to your concern.  ☺️

I look forward to reading your response!
