How to collect cash/pay in-store for Square Online site orders?

Good afternoon Seller Community ! 

 

Today I want to discuss a new feature that should be talked about that will be a great tool for businesses all over. I have written down many ideas based on obstacles my restaurant @CooksKitchn have faced during this journey using square as our number one POS system. I want to discuss a feature allowing customers to select a " pay with cash" option making purchases online. All business owners know that cash is king, and there are a lot of people out there that prefer to use cash rather than charge, not to mention with the increase of cash transactions we limit the amount of fraud purchases and bank disputes that have to be performed on a regular basis if you have a busy online store. I believe that customers should be able to select pay with cash when either choosing to pick up or placing an order for delivery. With an option for no show protection to the business, customers will be required to leave a card on file incase their product or service was never fulfilled we will be able to charge the customer either a full or percentage of the product. Yes we will take the risk of customers not having funds on that card and the transactions potentially being declined but its another huge step towards success for as Square users. Please consider this as an option during online checkout to maximize sales for businesses all over.

It's not something you can do at this time. I don't have a timeline on when it would become a thing but you should join our Beta Community where you can potentially test out new features first when they're released!

Hi! Great question. There isn't a way to manually add orders to that page specifically, but you have a couple options to accept payment over the phone depending on how you want to run your system. 

 

1: You can manually accept the card over the phone through either Virtual Terminal or the Point of Sale app. This is the easiest way and will allow you to track inventory. If you need an order ticket to print, you will need to use the Point of Sale app and make an open ticket for the order. 

2: You can create an invoice for them on the dashboard or app and email it to them right after the call is over. Again, this will track inventory, but will not print an order ticket or appear on your Orders Dashboard.

At this time, orders placed through your Square Online website must be paid for online. I've moved your post to an existing thread where this discussion is taking place, and where we're tracking requests for the ability to pay in person for online orders. 

 

The most common way that I've historically encountered businesses accepting cash payments for online orders are via invoices and/or phone orders. Have you considered offering a "phone-in" option through your Square Online website? This is likely the most tried and true method by which to accept cash payment for an order. I saw @BBTH's post here, and I thought up another workaround that would enable you to accept cash for pickup and delivery orders.

Workaround: You can add a banner to your main page letting your customers know that you are accepting cash payments:


 

I'd recommend adding a button to your banner here, as shown above "Call now to order".

 



This could take your customer to a couple of places:

  • I recommend having this button link to your Contact page, as shown above. 
  • You can alternatively opt to include a Phone link in your button. Keep in mind, this link will direct your customer to the actual phone portion of their phone and automatically dial your phone number, so this will not work on a laptop or desktop computer.

Here's an example of how you could clarify how your customer are able to pay using cash:
 


Once you get a call - or email - placing an order, you can put the order into the Square Point of Sale app using the open tickets feature. You can accept the order as if it was in-person, and print or close the ticket at the time of delivery/pickup.

I just want to add my two cents on this for an added reason to make this feature available ASAP. I run several seasonal fireworks tents in my area and due to the new COVID guidelines we will not be able to allow shoppers inside our tents, but selling fireworks online is also illiegal in my state, unless the shopper has to pay for their order in person when they pick it up.  So, we not only need this feature available, but we need to make it the ONLY available option. Enabling this will allow us to sell online and greatly increases our profits and effiency.  As of the date I am writting this, our fireworks season begins in 10 days, and I have set up a great online store, that just found out I can't really use.  PLEASE make this a thing.

I only want to accept orders and accept payments of cash or card later after the food has been delivered or picked up. How can I do this?

I'm following up on this because it's been more than 6 weeks and still no action on this critical issue.

 

Since this request was first made, the entire country shut down, many businesses went OUT of business, and now many of us have reopened, all with no solution to what should be a fairly simple feature request.

 

The one "answer" flagged as "best answer" just says "we agree this is important. We'll get back to you". Maddeningly frustrating.

 

Is anyone at Square actively working on this request, or is it just sitting in a cardboard box in a storage room somewhere?

I too am in the need of this feature. I have a mobile seafood retail business and I want to take orders online but I do not want to collect any payment as it may be 2 weeks before I get to that specific location. I do not ship anything at all. I drive all over the state and it is over 600 miles from one end to the other so shipping is out of the question for me.

 

I have had to turn off taking orders but making things visible so my customers know what I have.

 

I understand that square thinks this will lose revenue for them but if they cannot add this feature they will lose revenue when businesses move to another provider that will provide the feature. A lot of my customers will still pay with a credit card but there is less of a chance of fraud when taking a card in person vs taking an online payment.

 

The amount of refunds for people purchasing from out of state thinking that I ship products would be eliminated also.

 

Allowing this feature will make it easier for my customers as right now they have to send me a message with what they want. I want them to be able to place orders so that I can be sure to have the product that they want on the truck when I get there.

 

It's just better customer service all around. I will be starting up this week and I am already considering changing things to another provider just because of this feature.

@CooksKitchn as this ever resolved? We are in a similar situation and new to Square - I was told I'm pretty sure by 2 people at Square that I would be able to accept payments upon delivery. Similar to you, we are delivering food to our customers and are now looking to go online and start accepting CC payments. BUT we have a lot of customers that pay us cash - a lot of retired folks that simply don't do well with the online cc thing. We were told that we would be able to let customer order online and then pay as they wish upon delivery. So we developed our model to have our chefs take the Square card reader with them for those customers that choose to pay by credit card. Now I'm told we can't do that and our customers are FORCED to pay by cc when they order online? I should have developed my website somewhere else if someone would have told me that wasn't a choice. Any insight on this?

Any update on this request? We are new to Square and were told we would be able to give customers option to pay upon delivery. We have been delivering family dinners and we are at the point where we need a website and ability to accept credit cards. I called help line for Square several months ago and was told I would be able to select on my online store if I wanted to get paid upon delivery which would allow my older customers to pay cash. But now it seems that is still being developed? Please I need a response as I'm about to launch our website and just came across this issue. I would have to restart somewhere else if that's the case. Help! Thanks!

It has been months and still no progress has been made. Square really dropped the ball on this one as we were forced to struggle through these tough times and lose clientele because of it .
