Feature Request: Customize category icons, and add photos to categories like items

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Can you apply pictures for categories?

Would LOVE to be able to add a picture to each Category I create. I see we can add a picture for items but not for categories. Could you send a request for a future update for this? Would make our Square Register screen so much nicer and prettier. Thank you.

I know this thread has been around the sun a couple of times now. I've gone ahead and reached out to our Item Library Product Manager for an update. Currently this request is on the backlog and we're not expecting it to be implemented anytime soon. I understand this isn't the answer a lot of sellers want to hear, but I want to be as transparent as possible.

There are a lot of factors that come into play when prioritizing feature requests - comments like all of yours on this thread are one of the big inputs our product teams take into consideration. However, there are other things to consider as well -  build time, engineering bandwidth, and cost to name a few, as well as balancing this request with others that may take up time from the same engineering group.

I know there are 8 pages of comments about this issue, and it is a lot. Some of these factors like engineering bandwidth are less visible to you all, which is why I wanted to give a little insight into some of the behind-the-scenes work.

Thank you for your patience, and understanding - our eng teams are working on other features that we hope make POS even better for you. If we have updates on this thread, we'll post them here. All of you who have commented are already subscribed, and anyone new to the thread can click the "Subscribe" link on the first page.

It's 2020 and this still hasn't been addressed? With all the new extra fees I sure hope they're using that money to address some of the issues with this POS.

Has this been implemented yet? I see old threads discussing it but I see that the icon is still limited to color and limited characters. Square is now getting thousands more from us alone a year with the new fees so I'm wondering if they're now able to allocate resources to make improvements that have been requested for years by users.

Hey there @coppercup - Sorry to say, but item category tiles are still limited to colors and characters. 

I don't have a shareable timeline on when they can be replaced with icons but we'll be sure to give you a holler with any future announcements. Right now I've moved you to a similar thread so we can can easily track this feature request.

I am seconding this request! 

All of our items are in categories and it would help to quickly and effectively differentiate the food items we have for fast selection! Also, the letters often get cut off and you can only read a party of the work. 

It baffles me that it would be available for single items but not categories. The system is already capable of doing this, it just needs to be added to the categories as well.

This is a pretty logical feature that it appears many customers have been begging for for 4 or 5 years.  What is the point of having a feedback forum if you don't seem to care about what the customers want?  "Sorry but I have no update" doesn't help make our day-to-day operations smoother like adding this feature would.

I’ve been trying to work out why I couldn’t do this.

im actually considering using a different POS system because of this function not been available. 

My staff find it hard reading partial names as a button icon.

a picture of a brand / product / service fixes this issue. 

Plenty of other POS systems that give you this function.

Five years of requests for the ability to upload photos for the category label has been ignored. The usual response has been redundant and inadequate. Is it because you only think 111 posting sellers are the only ones that want this feature? 
What will it take to get this request made available? And pls don’t placate us by saying “it’s being looked into.”

We just need it done.

100% agree with CRPot.  We have over 100 locations and have been waiting far too long for this feature.
