Retail App: Serial Number

This seems so very basic, but it's missing from Square Retail and something that is needed for our business. Currently, there is a notes field for individual products, but you cannot scan serial numbers to populate that field. 

Suggested Solution: Impliment a dedicated serial number field that can be populated using a scanner. It would be nice to set individual items to require a serial number, with a prompt telling us to enter it during a transaction.

Other than that, our Square experience has been great!

The addition of serial numbers would be highly valuable to my store's retail side. We sell cameras and camera accessories, a lot of which have manufacturer warranties that can only be redeemed with a receipt that has a date as well as a product UPC and specific serial number. We are currently just adding the specific serial numbers into our inventory as $0 items, and "charging" that to the customer's purchase, but it would make things much easier to just have a serial number function inside of the square application itself.

I agree!  I just cannot imagine why there is not a simple pop up that you can set to appear on items requiring a serial number.  We are missing on tracking pumps and cleaners that later require serial numbers for warranty, making it a lot harder to prove warranty for manufacturers 😞

Since Square is lacking features like serial input and also the ability to input item costs (Canadian, we don't have access to square for retail) we've resorted to using the Shopventory App with Square and it's an excellent app. They have great support and their always releasing new features. We now have the ability to track serials on our electronics and also enter costs plus track vendor orders. I'm not sure why more people don't mention Shopventory but it's well worth the money.

Thanks for getting in touch.

At the moment there's unfortunately no way to differentiate inventory by serial number, other than creating a different item listing for each individual item you want to track a serial number against, then putting the serial number in the item description. This probably isn't going to be the most ideal way to manage your inventory though!

The best workaround I'd suggest would be to manually add a serial number as a note on the transaction in the checkout flow when the item is being sold. You can find steps on doing this here. Hope this helps, sorry we don't have a more elegant solution for this at the moment! I've moved this to the Feature Requests board so we can track further demand and requests for this feature in this thread.

We have been using Square POS for a long time and need to have a POS solution that's affordable and allows us to track inventory by serial number. Any news on this - we are about to jump ship and would prefer not to have to do this. We sell musical instruments and have to track by serial number-

We're in the same boat as @gerichap54.  Square, why is it taking so long to create a feature that your customers so obviously need?

Another Vote (times 1000) for this to be implemented. We are a bike business and need to be able to track high value serialised items such as bicycles, suspension, bike computers etc by serial number for both warranty and service purposes. Not to mention that having these serial numbers stored for accounting and insurance purposes is also a requirement.

We really want to move our business completely over to square and are very happy with most aspects of the platform but there seem to be some very obvious and essential things missing from the platform. I hope this can be implemented very soon

@Savica @gerichap54  Also a music store here too. Looking forward a way to do this as well. 

The only  solutions I have is if you have a UPC barcode in the free retail app is use the GTIN for the upc and then under SKU make that the serial number. 

or create variations with the name or  SKU being the serial number for each one.

that’s in addition to putting it in the note/description

make sure it’s attached to a specific customer name and phone number too.

otherwise it’s jump ship AND MOVE TO a dedicated Music store software like AIMSI

I’m tempted but not ready for that yet.

This simple request to add serial numbers has been asked by many for it seems like 4 years and Square has not implemented it yet. Do they really care about their community?

We can add custom attributes to each item but have no way to search for it or add it to the sales receipt. I added Serial Number here but later found out that it does nothing for me.

Why something so simple which should be in any pos system does square not listen to us?
