Square for Retail: Adding a store credit to a customer

Has there been an update to the Square retail app or gonna be in the future to add a store credit to a customers profile on it? It would so be helpful.

Re: How to give customer store credit/voucher

Trying to give a customer a complementary $25 for hardships.  I have the Advanced Accounting so I can use gift cards.  I would like to use a 100% discount promo code to pay for this gift card but the only option is Paypal or Stripe.  How can I give a customer store credit??

@Dimplesshop - There really isn't a great workaround at this point, especially in regards to your tax question. I'll be sure to send along the feedback about this to our product liaison team!

We recently opened a restaurant and are using Square for POS. We would like to be able to account for a trade we made for a worker who helped with opening construction (ie giving him in-store credit for the amount he would have charged for his work).

Is it possible to account for this in way through Square vs keeping a manual tally of it...?

Thank you!

I found this on another post, maybe it will help you:

To start, if you use Square Gift Cards, it would be easy to load $40 dollars onto one of them to gift to this customer. You could load the gift card using "Other Tender" or "Cash." This way you don't actually have to charge a credit card to get a balance on the gift card.

If you don't use Square Gift Cards, it might easiest to keep a record on the books, or put together some sort of paper gift card. Ultimately, it's what you feel most comfortable with.

Other than using a gift card, you can turn on "Open Tickets" under setting and then start a new ticke for the customer. Keep adding to the ticket until the total is equal (or close) to the amount of your barter.  It's not ideal, but it works, and it beats having a piece of paper with a running total.

Any updates as to whether a feature to return for store credit is in the works? I see a lot of posts around this topic (or returning to something other than the original card).

we really like square, but as a retailer that gives store credit for returns this really becoming impossible.

Hi again @Dimplesshop. While I don't have any sort of update to share right now, I do know that this is definitely something on our radar. I'll be sure to let you know once I have more concrete details. Thanks for taking the time to loop back.

I agree. It would be very nice to have the option to give a customer a credit in the actual system instead of having to "purchase" a gift card and then either email code or give them the card to use. I love having the customer database in the system and it makes complete sense to be able to issue them a credit and to show up when they come to purchase.

If you were to have a returned product how would you process that back into your inventory if you don't have a return option on the Square? Also, if you use a gift card for store credit on the return doesn't it show that as a sell and throw your books off?

We are an athletic/gymnastics facility and we are using Square for our special events such as our Friday Night Fun. The parents purchase a $10.00 concession card from us and the kids use the concession card in the concession stand. At the end of the night we will have kids who still have 4.00 left, etc... So instead of trying to keep up with the cards or have to refund the leftover money we would like to have a credit in the system for each family to use next time they come without worrying about losing the cards that state how much they have. We would like to start using credit cards to purchase the concession cards but want to only when the parent can purchase in the square and then it be put into their account. If I am making sense to you. It does not mess with our inventory as we only ring up when a kid uses money from their card right now.

@Bebalanced The best way to do this currently would be to head to your Square Dashboard and adjust the inventory manually on the back end.

Returns aren't automatically adjusted to your inventory.

@NWK It sounds like Square Gift Cards might be a great fit for you.

You can sell the Gift Cards with the $10.00 amounts on them to the parents for the kids to use. The remaining balance would remain on the Square Gift Cards and they can use them at a later time.
