Feature Request: Square for Restaurants Plus support on the Square Register

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Register work with Square for Restaurants?

 

We are a dine in restaurant. We just implemented Square with  Register and two iPads in April. We see the announcement of Square for Restaurants.  Is it compatible with the Register?

Hi there @ATKM 👋

I can tell you a few things right off the bat, but I'll need a bit of time to get back to you about the other bits listed. 


 

1. It sounds like you're asking for an expeditor feature? If so, we can't provide an exact ETA, but this is coming soon!

 

​​​​2. There is not a setting that would enable automatic surcharges. Learn more here.


3. This is still considered a feature request for the Square Register.

8. Recall is supported as of today 🎉

12. You should be able to use the Dashboard app for this, which is currently available on the app store. Or the Square POS app, as @SpadaFarmhouse suggested!


I have a question for you about #9 - you shouldn't need full access to manage Square Online. There is a separate permission to access to Square Online. However, it is all or nothing within Square Online for now. Is your request that you would like to enforce that only Full Access accounts can manage your Square Online website?

I'm so hyped for the Register update too, fingers crossed it's this summer.

Valentina below mentioned the Square Dashboard app for #12, it's only for iPhone so I can't use it but good to know it's out there.

For #1 I am not sure what an expeditor feature is but I think we are talking about different things. Basically we would like the ticket to stay on the KDS even if all the items are cleared, this is essential when using multiple screens. Happy to explain more if I need to, just let me know!

 

#2 I must be using the wrong word, or I am misunderstanding the guide you sent. We are not wanting to pass on any of our Square or CC Processing fees to our customers. We are just wanting to charge a 10% mark-up on take-out orders and a 20% mark-up on delivery orders. This is because we do not use direct integration and currently have to have two menus on our POS one for In-house and one for delivery. 

 

#3 seems to be working! There is 5-10minutes of lag but that's fine

#2 changes a lot for us, it seems like I may be using the wrong word but adding to the price of an item, like a discount but the reverse would be a mega help.

I was hoping you could clarify a few of the asks so I can relay it back to my team:

Interesting use! It sounds like you might want to control the price adjustment per item

Another approach to this is using pre-selected modifiers. In the example with Cheese, you could have a modifier of "Cheese" priced at, say, $1, pre-selected when adding the item. By removing the Cheese modifier you would remove the additional $1 from the price of the item. Here is some additional info that might help in setting this up.


6. Customizable Conditional Modifiers

 

Could you give an example of what you mean by this? Sounds interesting.

@ATKM #2 has a work around.

 

1.  Set up a second or third "tax" and call it delivery charge...to go charge..covid-19...whatever you want.

2.  Create a tax rule for dining options and attach it to the dining option like to-go or delivery (don't forget to make sure you charge your regular sales tax also).

3.  So on your say "dine in"  or "for Here"  whatever is your default dining option your rule will say do not charge "delivery surcharge".  On the delivery dining option you will leave it on there and it will automatically add this % to the order.

 

You just have to train staff to make sure to set the dining option at the start of any transaction so you don't forget before you charge their card.  On your reports the "tax" will show as whatever fee you have added.

 

 

#9 to expand on this a little bit.  You can now give full access to a trusted team member, but banking info and the ability to access transfers is only available to the account owner.  This is a huge change for security.

 

#10 is available when you use device codes and you use team management.  All of my employees have a clock in clock out pin and permission sets and it logs who is on what register etc.

Hey @Donnie-M , thanks for the #2 workaround!  I'll definitely try that out. 

 

For #10 we have the same setup, we would just like something a little more secure for our managers. The 4 digit pin is a little too easy for everyone to get and remember.

Hi @wiggins, so first off every time I said conditional modifiers I meant conversational modifiers. My mistake!

 

#5. I think that's a decent workaround but I have a feeling my kitchen would kill me. Because that would mean every item would have 8 or so modifiers on it and the KDS would be completely full after 1 order. Negative Modifiers would be a huge help and I am not sure this workaround solves the problem. 

 

#6 Customizable Conversational Modifiers* Sorry for the typo but I think a good example would be being able to allow multiplying, dividing, adding and subtracting. I think right now there is Add and Extra, but what if someone wants Double or Triple on there? Sure the name change would be useful but the real need for CCM would be to have the settings on the back end where hitting Triple multiplies your modifier by 3. Having the option to multiply, divide, add and subtract is a game-changer and then being able to have Conversational Modifier Sets to apply to different types of items just perfects the feature.

Updating the list below to remove the features already addressed and to try and keep this thread more organized:

 

  • #1 Keep tickets on KDS after all items are cleared. (Tap the top of the ticket to clear the ticket.)
  • #2 Surcharge or a reverse discount where we can add cost to items to help cover the cost of delivery services without needing to have two separate items.
  • #4 Have Self-Serve Orders show up as such and not “Delivery” or as Online Store orders on KDS.
  • #5 Allow Modifiers to subtract a price. (Having Conversational Modifiers control this may not work, preferably just the ability to have negative cost modifiers)
  • #6 Customizable Conversational Modifiers
  • #10 Different login options (Longer pin codes for managers or swipe cards)
  • #11 Remove numpad on Square Register (that’s some prime real estate)
  • #13 CC Authorization (for bar tabs)
  • #14 Option to scroll instead of flipping pages when going through modifiers

 

I also corrected some typos and tried to reword some items to make them clearer

It sounds like you may be in the Beta for 86ing Online items via your Square Register, as this feature is not currently available for everyone, @ATKM. I'm glad to hear this feature is working for you!

2. Ability to add a Surcharge to tickets (Automatic surcharges for delivery and pickup items)
When referring to Square Online orders, this is already available for delivery and self-serve ordering (i.e. QR code ordering). Surcharges for Square Online pickup orders are not yet available.

Can you possibly expand a bit about what you mean here?

2. We don't use Square Online for deliveries, so when I say Pick-up and Delivery I mean the dining options within the POS. This is for 3rd party deliveries, we do use DoorDash but we also use a couple local companies that do not integrate with Square.

 

4. Sure! Here is a photo of how the Self Serve looks on the KDS:

As you can see the screen says Online Store, Delivery and Deliver which is just unnecessary confusion

 

10. We use a Square Register, a Square Stand and two walk-around tablets. So being able to have a 6-8 pin option may be easier in the short term but manager cards are pretty standard in restaurants.
