Square for Restaurants: Can you export your menu?

I have a wine bar with hundreds of wines.  Is there a way to add the menu name to the mass import item library template?  I can fill in the menu name there instead of going into the item and manually assigning a menu.

If I sell my business can the menu I have built into Square POS go with it?

The new owner will need to set up their own account with Square, but it is definitely possible to export your Item Library (menu) and import it to the new account.

To export your menu items from your current account:

  • Visit Items in your online Square Dashboard
  • Click Export (located in the top-right corner of your screen)
  • Click Confirm Export
  • A CSV spreadsheet will download to your computer

To import your menu items to the new account:

  • Visit Items in your online Square Dashboard
  • Click Import (located in the top-right corner of your screen)
  • Select Modify Item Library
  • Drag and drop the CSV file into the upload area or click “select it from your computer”, then Upload

  • Click Confirm Import to upload your menu into the new account

This should make the transition easy for everyone involved.

So, I'm able to export my menu item list but what about ALL of my customers on square? The buyers have their own square and will be merging my business with their own. I know I can give them the customers that I imported but I'd like to transfer all the customers to the new buyers.

Hi @BOONgarden

You can export your Customer Directory from your Square Dashboard.

To export your Customer List:

  1. Visit Customers in your online Square Dashboard
  2. Click Import / Export > Export Customers.
  3. Click Download.

I have 6 locations.  I have added all my items.  The items are available for all my locations, but I would like to copy the entire menu over and then tweak from there.  As it appears I have to completely redo my menu for every location.  This is a pain.  There has to be a better way?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your post @cbenson!

At this time it's not possible to copy a menu from one location to another. This is a feature that the Restaurants team is considering building, but I don't have a timeline for when it might be available. I can definitely see how it would be useful though and we'll share more details in this thread if and when they are available!

Keep in mind your item library can be associated with multiple locations and this means you can search/locate items to add to each menu.

Update 2019: If you create a new location with Square for Restaurants you can now match your item library: from your Dashboard go to Account & Settings > Locations > click on a location name > click Match item libraryWhen you match your item library the same menu will be brought from the first location  to your new location!

It makes this system MUCH less attractive to people like me with multiple locations and the same menu.  I'm still on the Square train I think, but this feature seems like something that could be added in relatively short order.

Thanks for the reply though.  It seemed such a basic thing I thought there would for sure be a way.

I have set up our menu, complete with modifiers and categories as Items. Can that entire file be tranfered to S4R as Menu? Pulling each item over individually is possible. Exporting the entire Item file to Excel is possible, but don't see a way to import the excel file into Menu.

Thanks for surfacing this, @cfhalterman, and welcome to the seller community! I'm going to run your post by our Restaurant Team to be sure I've got the facts straight—will be back with more clarity ASAP. Appreciate your patience.

Circling back here for a bit more clarification: are you working with two separate Square Restaurant accounts? If so, you'll be able to transfer the menu via CSV but restaurant-specific settings do not transfer at this time (e.g. display groups, advanced modifier settings, and auto-add to check).

If this doesn't help clear things up, please reply here with a bit more information on what you're running into. You can also get in touch with a member of our Customer Success team who can take a deeper dive into your settings. Either way, we'll make sure this gets cleared up!
