My Beta Story: an Interview with Beta Seller Joseph Brown of Super Smash Burgers

In this blog post we’re thrilled to introduce Joseph (@SSB_YVR), co-owner of Super Smash Burgers, a vibrant, queer- and Indigenous-owned smash burger restaurant in Vancouver. Join us as we dive into Joseph’s journey, his vision for the restaurant, and how they’re making a meaningful impact in their community and in our Beta Community.

Hi, Joseph! Tell us a little bit about you and your business.

My name is Joseph, and I’m the co-owner of Super Smash Burgers, alongside my business partner, Vernon. We’re a queer- and Indigenous-owned smash burger restaurant based in Vancouver, located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples. Our focus is on serving gourmet smash burgers made with fresh, high-quality ingredients from local farms and suppliers. Our burgers feature 100% local Black Angus beef sourced from The Butcher Langley, a family-owned business.

At the core of Super Smash Burgers is our Do Good Things initiative. We believe in supporting our community by paying our staff higher wages, by offering bonuses when possible, and by collaborating with local charities. One example is our support of the Urban Native Youth Association’s Two-Spirit program, which assists Indigenous youth in the 2SLGBTQI+ community. Vernon and I are incredibly proud of our commitment to making a positive impact through these efforts.

How long have you been a part of the Beta Community? What made you want to join?

We’ve been part of the Beta Community for a little over nine months. We joined because we saw an opportunity to shape the POS system to meet our specific needs. After trying several other POS systems, none quite had the functionality we were looking for without needing to rely on third-party applications. Joining the Beta Program has given us the chance to directly influence how the system works for our business.

What has been your experience with the Ingredients Cost beta? How has it helped and/or challenged you?

The Ingredients Cost beta has really helped us get a clearer, big-picture understanding of our cost of goods (COGs) and a more accurate handle on our inventory. While the initial setup was a bit tedious, once we had everything configured, it was incredibly helpful. We’ve been making good use of the recipe feature, although it does have some limitations. For example, stock can’t be input in fractions, and we can’t assign costs to modifiers yet. So while it’s given us a better grasp of our COGs, we still don’t have a complete picture.

What have you enjoyed the most about the Square beta program thus far?

The people! Working with the beta staff has been fantastic — everyone is super receptive and open to feedback. It’s great to know that the input we provide actually shapes the platform. For example, feedback I gave was implemented, and it’s made managing stock so much easier. That level of responsiveness is what makes the beta program so valuable to us.

Do you have any feature requests at the top of your list?

Yes. We’d love the ability to customize the customer experience with QR code table ordering. It’s a feature that could enhance how we serve our guests and streamline their experience.

What’s next for your business?

We’re excited to be moving into a larger, better-equipped kitchen, which will help us expand our offerings and reach more people. We’re also gearing up for the 2025 summer festival season and aim to be present at more events around Vancouver. Growth is definitely on the horizon!

Where can people find you?

We’re in the process of relocating, but soon you’ll be able to find us at Donnellan’s Irish Pub, located at 1082 Granville Street in downtown Vancouver. We’re aiming to open in the first half of November 2024, and we can’t wait to bring our smash burgers to the downtown crowd! You can also find us on all major delivery platforms, but we always recommend ordering directly from our website (Try-SSB.COM) to save on fees.
