Remove Default Categories from Library

Remove Default Categories from Library

Having a set of default, unremovable categories that takes up more than 3/4 of the Library screen is untenable.  I'd wager the majority of Square users don't use Gift Cards or Rewards; a few probably use discounts and service charges.

We should have the ability to edit/remove/hide categories on the library screen.  As a Square user for both my personal business and as head (read: only) IT guy for a local nonprofit, being able to remove the useless-to-us categories would save me SO MUCH PAIN from volunteers getting "lost" because they hit the wrong category.

(Yes, I created a for-dummies document that a lobotomized kindergartner could follow.  No, it didn't help.  Anyone who's worked with people will understand...there's always that one person who couldn't find their a** with both hands and a map, who throws up their hands, turns off their brain, and wails for help the second they get slightly confused.  Usually while you're elbow deep in something else, but their problem is the most important thing in the world!)

Re: Feature Request: Option to remove "Redeem Rewards" and/or "Gift Cards" from

I know they added more unwanted items on the main screen, but Square thinks by adding the one grid to our phone has helped. We are at farmers markets, craft shows and concessions where speed is key. We have our iPad set up grid style that helps. When I have a line and have to use my phone one grid are area doesn’t help. Make the option happen to turn off unnecessary items. We are a community asking of Square to please offer this as a way to speed up our transactions. For the love of pete sakes hear our words! We need a toggle to turn off those unwanted items! TOGGLE SWITCH TURN OFF ITEMS UNNEEDED!

Re: Feature Request: Option to remove "Redeem Rewards" and/or "Gift Cards" from

Now the “new” home screen has 5 lines of unneeded space hogs instead of 2 lines of useless functions.  On my phone (which is the ONLY way I use square) I can only see two of my items, but I have two scroll up to see my menu.  I work farmers markets where transaction speed in incredibly important, every step slows down sales.  It is hard to fathom that SQUARE could make the issue worse than it was.

Re: Remove Redeem Rewards from Item List

Hi there!

The Redeem Rewards selection cannot be removed completely, however using your "Items Grid" you can customize what appears as available to select.

Head over to our Support Center to read more about the Items Grid.

This is a know problem in which Square has no interest in addressing.  For years.

This is absurd that this issue hasn't been dealt with yet. Come on Square, we sellers expect better! There is no point in making every new seller think 'Hmm, how do I get these two out of my prime phone real estate', terrible initial user experience when everything else is done so well. Even if these are features that are being pushed its a bad decision to force people to try and use them. I'm sure some sellers have gone to other platforms over this issue.

This is a simple fix, just add some toggles in the Settings or something.

One more (very irritated) vote for the ability to move or turn off the Redeem Rewards and Gift Cards from the list. We've found enough of these quirks and non-responses to simple, fixable issues that we are probably going to switch systems as a result. Disappointing.

We want "redeem rewards" and "gift cards" removed.  It's simple on a tablet  but we mostly use SmartPhones.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts around this @teegee

I don't have anything new to report on this, but if anything does change I'll be sure to chime in with an update. I can see how being able to customize what you see on your mobile Point of Sale would help clean things up when checking your customers out.

Hopefully we can get some movement on this in the near future.

EJ - Your answer does not fix the known problem.  04-17-2016 was when this thread was first started and Square refuses to address the issue.  Why is that?  It is nearly 2 1/2 Years.  Remember the users are paying for your service.

Super Seller

Maybe “Delete” is to strong of a word for what we are all asking to be done. Can we have the “Option” of a customized pos system? If we need the gift card option, redeem awards or whatever is needed on our POS system let us choose those options. Thanks

That's what I had in mind as well @MamiesToffee

More of a customization or option toggle rather than an outright removal.

@Wackym Completely understand the frustration with the timeline on this. Our Product teams absolutely read and review all of the feedback that we receive, especially in the Community.

Unfortunately this isn't something that's been prioritized, but we'll continue to advocate on your behalf and thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and also for sticking with us as we work to become better.

I think we're all in agreement here that "delete" really just means "hide." There's no reason it would ever need to be deleted entirely, but it certainly would be helpful to hide it from the POS.

I work busy events selling a variety of snacks/drinks and have to be able to process transactions quickly. Having to scroll up/down through items is a necessary evil, but taking up valuable screen real estate with gift cards and rewards is super frustrating when speed is so critical. I will never see 99.9% of these customers again, so neither rewards nor gift cards make sense for me. And those wasted precious seconds do add up over the course of a 5 hour event.

I do understand that you're limited in what problems you can tackle. I used to work in software so I know that there's no such thing as a simple change even when the code to do so is simple. There's UI considerations, testing, rollout, etc. and these things take time and resources that could be spent on other larger issues.

But please also understand that this is a worthwhile issue to resolve for your customers. It is low-risk high-reward feature for your customers and also makes your product itself more attractive. From the customer POV, the current problem looks like either a massive oversight on Square's end or a cheap marketing ploy to get us to sign up for features we don't even need.

Thank you for reading & responding to our replies and I do hope this can get resolved!

Not the ideal workaround, but what I do is place items in categories so if I select a specific category vs "All Items", the rewards and gift cards don't show on the menu. I realize this will probably not be the best solution for those that have a lot of transactions/day.
