An update on Square’s new pricing for online payment products for sellers in the UK

This post has been updated on 17th November, 2022.

Hi Seller Community,

Square is changing online card transaction fees as a result of the UK leaving the European Union and card network cost changes. The new fees will go into effect for all sellers from today 17th November 2022. Payments taken via Invoices, Virtual Terminal and manually keyed-in on the Square Point of Sale app will still be charged at 2.5% per card transaction. Our In-Person payments rates are also not affected by this change.

Please review the FAQ below to understand what changes may impact your business.

What products are impacted by this fee change?

This change affects the fees for our online payment products. Payments taken via Invoices, Virtual Terminal and manually keyed-in on the Square Point of Sale app will still be charged at 2.5% per card transaction. Our In-Person payments rates are also not affected by this change.

Online processing rates will change for the following products: eCommerce APIs and SDKs, Square Online (all plans), Square Online Checkout, eGift Cards, Square Appointments, Square for Retail, Square Subscriptions.

Online transactions will be charged at:

Current price

New price from 17th November

Transactions with UK cards

1.9%

1.4% + 25p

Transactions with non-UK cards

1.9% if EEA cards

2.9% if non-EEA cards

2.5% + 25p

For Square Online Premium users, online transactions will be charged at:

Current price

New price from 17th November

Transactions with UK cards

1.75%

1.4% + 15p

Transactions with non-UK cards

1.75% if EEA cards

2.9% if non-EEA cards

2.5% + 15p

Monthly subscription fees for all Square Online plans, Square for Retail, Square Appointments will not change.

Why are we changing our payment processing rate?

Square’s goal has always been to build accessible, easy to use tools to help sellers of all sizes start, run and grow their business. Square periodically revisits both product and processing price levels to account for the changing costs to build our products and serve our customers at the highest level possible.

As a result of Brexit, the UK is no longer subject to the EU Interchange Fee Regulation; major card networks have modified the structure and amount of interchange rates (fees set by card networks).

In order to offer more competitive rates and to continue offering the same quality of experience that you have come to expect from Square, we are changing our fees to reflect these underlying market changes effective on 17th November 2022.

Will this impact other products and processing rates?

No – Payments taken via Invoices, Virtual Terminal and manually keyed-in on the Square Point of Sale app will still be charged at 2.5% per card transaction.

Our In-Person payments rates are also not affected by this change.

All merchants will continue to receive all other benefits they have today by selling with Square:

  • No startup fees, statement fees or PCI compliance fees
  • No refund or chargeback fees
  • No separate or additional fees for American Express cards
  • Secure and encrypted payments
  • Speedy transfers

Do I need to take action?

No. Fees will automatically update on 17th November 2022 if you process transactions that are subject to the price changes above.

Can I switch to the new rate earlier than 17th November 2022?

No, but you will be automatically moved onto the new rate if you process transactions that are subject to the price changes above from 17th November.

What if I’m a new Square seller?

You will be automatically moved to the new rates on 17th November 2022. Until then, you will be on the current rate outlined in the terms and conditions you read when you signed up.

Why are card-not-present transactions processed at a higher rate?

The fees for card-not-present transactions are higher because they are typically associated with higher risk, as neither the card holder nor the card itself have to be present for the transaction to occur.

Is there a way to prevent customers from paying with a non-UK card on my Square Online site or Checkout Links?

We are unable to prevent customers from completing a transaction with a particular payment card.

Where can I see my card processing rate?

To view your card processing rates, visit Pricing & Subscriptions in your Square Dashboard, then select a location using the dropdown titled Main Account (found above VAT ID).

How can I tell if a payment was made with a non-UK card?

Open your online Square Dashboard, then go to Transactions. When you tap on a specific payment, you will be able to see the card brand used and fee charged.

Where can I see the fees I’ve previously paid to Square?

There are two ways to view a breakdown of card processing fees paid by payment type:

Payment Method Report

The Payment Method Report provides a high-level overview of fees paid, categorised by payment type.

  1. Visit Reports > Payment Methods in your online Square Dashboard.
  2. Use the date selection tool to select a custom date range or click Last Year to view fees paid in 2021 or This Year to view fees paid year-to-date for 2022.
  3. Click Export. The report will download to your computer as a CSV file where you can see a breakdown of fees paid for card-present and card-not-present payments in the date range selected.

Transactions Report

The Transactions Report, once downloaded to your computer as a CSV file, provides a detailed account of all payments accepted in a given time period. You’ll see a full breakdown of transaction details, including individual payment method, amount, fees paid and more.

  1. Visit Transactions in your online Square Dashboard.
  2. Use the date selection tool to select a custom date range or click Last Year to view fees paid in 2021 or This Year to view fees paid year-to-date for 2022.
  3. Using the filters, select Card as your Payment Method.
  4. Click Export > Transactions CSV.
  5. This report will download to your computer as a CSV file you can open using a spreadsheet program.

Super Seller

90% of my transactions are online, with most being about the £20 mark.

As a premium users, doing some quick maths - this is going to cost (assuming the continued £20 average) an extra 9p per transaction.

I really want to be grumpy about this, but having watched some stuff about inter card fees in the US right now I think we're getting off pretty well.

@tranguyen can we get some feedback thought as to the other pricing with this review? I've always understood keyed transactions cost more due to risk levels etc but still can't understand why an invoice payment is charged at 2.5% rather than the online rate.

Can we also ensure that payment links and online checkout are updated to charge the applicable rate for the seller as currently they're charged at the 'standard' rate even for premium online customers.

Hi,

So can I just check, in person transactions, when the product is launched in the app, (& so not manually inputting the price) remains as current and only online purchases have increased?

Thanks,

Hi @NHChocs, correct. Our In-Person payment rates (either an item or custom amount) will remain the same.

The fees are not affected by the price or how it is entered, but simply by the payment method.

Online processing rates will change for the following products: eCommerce APIs and SDKs, Square Online (all plans), Square Online Checkout, eGift Cards, Square Appointments, Square for Retail, Square Subscriptions - if you don't use any of these products, your fees will remain unchanged.

Please let me know if there are any other doubts or questions - I know it can be a lot to take in at first so we're happy to help.

Hey @Sam_400º, I just want to follow up here with some more information from our team.

Although online transactions, invoices and keyed-in payments are al card-not-present transactions, invoices and keyed-in payments carry higher risks than regular online transactions. This is why invoices and keyed-in payments are charged at different rates compare to online transactions. Our team do evaluate our pricing structure on an ongoing basis but we don't have any plans to make any additional changes to our processing rates.

With regards to Square Online Checkout, at the moment, all customers will be charged the standard rate as subscriptions to Square Online services do not apply towards Square Online Checkout. I've shared your feedback with our team and it is something we're looking to improve.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be happy to help!

Hi

This is going to be a major issue for me because of my transaction size.  I've contacted sales but heard nothing in the last 48 hours - can someone get back to me ASAP please as I will potentially need to move providers and rewrite my checkout ahead of my busy Christmas period unless we can get somewhere on my specifics.

Thanks

This is a killer for me.

We run a work social club with £1.00 subscriptions each week and transactions on products sold are around the £1.00-£1.50 mark so now this is going to cost me about £0.27 per transaction instead of the current £0.02. - kills any kind of profit
Why does a subscription have to be any different from an invoice

This all seems quite confusing.  However, can you confirm, given that many of our sales are at local markets and small value - direct to customers paying by card using our little Square card box - that these are classed as 'In Person' rather than 'Online' or 'Online Checkout' as those would be transactions made via the website?  As such, our transactions would remain at 1.75% as opposed to moving to 1.4% + 15p.

We're already struggling with having to pay the enforced 50p per delivery request for no value added by Square, and it seems small businesses are really being penalised.  Again, does this new online pay structure mean that as we try to build a small, profitable business that also provides local delivery, we now succumb to have to pay 1.4% + 15p + 50p (for the privilege of being able to deliver ourselves) for those orders made via the website?

Transaction reports no longer have an export function showing and neither does some others I use to export, there is also no custom date function either.

Hi @Philip-i, I believe this was due to an issue we had with some of our services over the weekend which should now be resolved.

Apologies for the inconvenience, can you confirm if you can now see your reports correctly?

Hi @danofthemoment, very sorry we missed your first comment!! Thanks for commenting again.

Correct, any payments you make on your Square Reader via the Point of Sale app are classed as in-person sales and the rate will remain at 1.75%.

I'm sorry if our initial communications regarding this were unclear.

With regard to local delivery, yes the fee would be 1.4% + 15p + 50p from November 17th.

Again, these changes are coming into place as a result of the UK leaving the European Union and card network cost changes, but I understand how this can affect small businesses and we're passing all of this feedback on internally.
