Custom Tax amount

We charged an amount (a deposit) without charging Sales Tax. How do we add that Sales Tax (for the deposit) to the balance amount? Or even charge a separate amount JUST for Sales Tax?

It appears the Sales Tax "amount" cannot be edited (just toggled on or off)? Or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance

Peter

Hello @peteraylin thanks for your post. Once a transaction is recorded it can't really be edited, including changing sales tax. You have a few options; you can return the whole transaction, and then re-run that charge including the correct tax this time. But the easiest option is probably just to manually calculate what the tax should have been and create another charge just for that item. Are you still in contact with the buyer to rerun the card again?

This isn't the best solution if you're trying to maintain the best records for Sales Tax, but if you're also using another accounting program like Quickbooks, you'll just add these transactions and record to their correct accounts there....so your tax records will still be accurate.

Hey Charlie,

Thanks for the response.

So, just to be clear, there is NOT a way to "edit" the Sales Tax dollar amount (while entering a NEW transaction). The Sales Tax can only be calculated as a percentage amount as set up in ones "Sales Tax" settings.

Bummer!

Thanks

Peter

Hello @peteraylin sorry for the delay in  getting back to you...yes you are correct, you can't really edit the sales tax but you may be able to do a few things, depending on how you're creating a sale. I mostly use the Square POS on a Square Register, and it may also work in the Square app. Not sure about online or thru invoicing....but if you have a sale with items listed, and a line item for the sales tax, you may be able to click on that sales tax amount and do (only) a few things. You may be able to click and DELETE the sales tax all together. And you MAY be able to assign another sales tax rate, but I think you'd have to already have created a new/separate sales tax rate, and then you'd see an option to select between any sales tax rate already set up. BUT not edit the actual amount directly in the sale. Hope this helps.
