An update on postcode requirements for Square’s Virtual Terminal for International Cards
An update on postcode requirements for Square’s Virtual Terminal for International Cards

Hi Seller Community,

I’m here to share information about an important update to Square’s Virtual Terminal.

You will need to enter a postcode when processing cards issued in the United States, Canada or United Kingdom on the Virtual Terminal. Note that you will not need to enter a postcode for Australian cards.

What does this mean for my business?

When you are processing card payments on the Virtual Terminal, if the card was issued in the following countries: United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, you will need to enter a postcode.

Please note that payments will not be processed without a valid postcode.

UKUK

USUS

CanadaCanada

Why do you check postcodes?

Postcodes are used as an additional form of security to verify the card is being used by the cardholder or authorised person.

Alongside this, Square also provides a set of services and tools to help keep your account safe, including live transaction monitoring. This allows us to spot suspicious transactions and review them. If we determine a transaction(s) on your account is likely to be the work of scammers, we’ll alert you via email.

My customers used virtual cards issued by sites like Booking.com. What information should I ask them?

If your customer is using a virtual card from Booking.com, please check the information provided by Booking.com.

When does this go into effect?

The update has been rolled out and is currently live.
