PCI Compliance and Android v4.0.4 and Earlier

Hi Sellers!

We wanted to bring an important change to your attention—especially for those of you who are currently using Android v4.0.4 or iOS 4 to process payments using Square.

For both security reasons, and to ensure PCI compliance, Square will no longer allow payments to be processed on devices running Android v4.0.4 or earlier or iOS 4 or earlier beyond June 1st, 2018. Given the age of the operating systems (released in 2011 and 2010, respectively), you may need to purchase a new device or update to a newer version.

Android customers: You need to be Android v4.1 (or newer), and have your Square Point of Sale app updated to version 4.71.2 (or newer) before June 1, 2018.

iOS customers: You will need to be on iOS 5 (or newer) before June 1, 2018.

To learn how to update your device’s software, read Update Your Device Software. Note that older devices may not be compatible with the latest versions of their respective operating systems. In the event you do need to purchase a new device, check out Device Compatibility to ensure your new device works with our platform.

To learn how to update your version of Point of Sale, read Update Your App.
