Help!

Hi

I'm new to square and trying to set up my website.

I am selling candles online, so my dilemma, what would I have as page, category, item, option, modifier

I need candle, choice of scent of candle, diffuser, choice of scent of diffuser, choice of reeds for diffuser etc etc

It currently looks like - shop all (page)

Candles, Diffusers, Wax Melts, Car Diffusers - is the (category) although it says browse by category, list all items and they are all listed so not sure if they are an item or category!

I have 12 scents (each one listed as an item)

Click on the individual scent - there is then a drop down choice leading back to candle, diffuser, wax melt, car diffuser with their individual prices

I then need an option of two reed colour choices for the diffusers (this currently shows as a drop down - as a modifier) and although says reed choice, can be clicked even if you are buying a candle.

Hope I'm making sense!

Hi @sscents, welcome to the Seller Community 🙂

I'd be happy to help It sounds like you're making good progress with organizing your products into categories and listing them as items.

Regarding your query about differentiating between categories and items, categories are typically broader classifications under which you list your items. So, "Candles," "Diffusers," etc., would indeed be your categories, and the individual scents or types of products within them would be considered items.

To handle the various options you mentioned, such as scent choices for candles and diffusers or colour choices for reeds, I would suggest using options and variations.

This feature allows you to offer different variants of a product, such as different scents or colours, for your customers to choose from.

Have you published your site yet? If yes, feel free to share it here as that would give us a better insight into the set-up!

That's great thanks - sorted now!

Next question: I wanted to put my raw stock on the system which would then be deducted once a sale occurred, these items are made up at the pos so say I have 100 candle jars, I don't know at this point which scent would sell in the jar - so wanted an overall stock list of 100 candle jars that would then be reduced to 99 when the scent was sold.  Is this possible do you know?  Thanks

Thanks for the update @sscents!

It’s great to hear that the advice from Breffni helped with arranging your categories and item options.

If you’re hoping to track your inventory against the candle jars rather than the individual scents, then using options and variations would effectively duplicate your stock levels, as the system would recognise these scent options as finished products that you have on hand to sell and prompt you to enter a stock count for each scent.

If you were to set up your master item as a scented candle and then offer your scents as Modifiers, this would allow you to keep track of inventory against your jars. Modifiers are different from item variations, because they’re not tied to your inventory levels and can be applied to any item.

I appreciate this might not be an ideal solution, as I’d imagine you would like to showcase and describe each scent as an individual item. So, as an alternative, you might want to take a look at the offerings from some of our integration partners on the App Marketplace who specialise in inventory management.
