Adding section at Checkout

Is there a way to add a specific section at checkout to capture certain data?  I am part of a non-profit and have items that are for members only.  I'd like to add these to my square website but need a way to have them put in their member numbers so I can verify they are a part of our association.  I looked through the options that a available to me but none would make it a requirement at check out.  I may be over thinking things but any help would be nice.

HI, you can add a text box to the listing that is required so it can’t be purchased without a membership number.

select your item, Edit Item, Manage Modifiers, +Create New, How will your customer’s be modifying?, select Typing Text Into A Box, Text Box Settings, Text Box Label (what customer sees), Character Limit, Make This Required Field (check box far right)
