Used Square POS question

Hi all,

I’ve been poking around the Internet for a little bit looking for information on different “generations“ of the square POS. My wife is looking at a POS that is part of an auction for a restaurant that went out of business. Is there a way to see which generation the POS system is?  I’m assuming that there’s a point at which the system becomes outdated. Does anyone have any information or advice on buying a used system?

For the square stands if it uses a lighting connection to the iPad it’s newer and if it uses a 30 pin connection it’s older usually.

That's helpful.  Besides the ipad connector, is there a way to tell which generation of the hardware it is?  I've tried to find a generation/release day list somewhere (like you can do with cellphones -- release date, model number, etc.) but I can't find anything for square POS hardware.  Is there a way to see what the different models/updates have been over time?
