Feature request : Combining items into a category

It is extremely tedious to try to keep your square library tidy and efficient. And for no reason.

We have a bakery and also sell merchandise so we have a huge variety of items we sell in our stores and our employees have to deal with a lot of different sales situations so the POS needs to be as simple and logical as possible. And so does the backend as many different people with little technological background have to edit the library on square.

There seems to be no easy way to create new items and categories like it is common in many other apps now. In the Square library, you cannot select items and combine into one item with variations, or under one category via drag and drop, or even copy and paste.

We order a lot with Faire which has an square import option to create new library items.

But if we order for example 10 different kinds of scented candles, each of them ends up being its own item. So over time, you end up with hundreds of single items under one category.

And there is no way to combine them under let's say "candles" to make it easy for the salesperson to find. You have to manually sit down create an item and 10 variations of it.

You would think nowadays there should be a drag and drop option or a more visual/logical way to organize this. Not in a spreadsheet that you need some excel classes for.

PLEASE ADD SOME SIMPLE WAYS TO COMBINE ITEMS AND CATEGORIES!!!

2 options for you:

1) When the new items are created you could click on the new items and list them in a Category of Candles.  The default is just a NEW item as you have described.

2) Can you export your Faire order to a spreadsheet and export your Square Items to a spreadsheet?  Square has headings for Categories and Variations, You could copy and paste them right into the correct columns of the spreadsheet and upload it to Square.  Just leave the Token column blank for new to Square items.

I have not had any Spreadsheet classes and have found it easy to move Items around with copy and paste or just editing the spreadsheet using other programs like Google Sheets which is free, or LibreOffice Calc which is also free.

I understand that your looking for a drag and drop of a new item to a variation or category as feature request just trying to give you work arounds for now.  Simple way with Cut and paste in Excel would be open an exported item list from Square and one from Faire.  Have them both opened on your desktop, Copy Item Name column or what ever it is and paste it to to the end of Squares Item list, and repeat for other column you need transferred from Faire.  Next come up with a category ( Candles ) type this in the top of the new items you just pasted in under Category, then copy it and paste it in the rest of the rows you want as Candles for a category.  For Variations you could copy the candle name from the Faire spreadsheet and apply it as the variation name.  Don't forget to fill in the price and tax(y/n) if applicable.

The copy paste of moving items around as easy as you would like could be a problem since as you stated alot of people have access to this and could do it by accident.  Another thing to look at is a Barcode and Scanner system, found out doing this my associates just scan and do not have to locate items in Categories or variations to get pricing and makes it quick at checkout.

We make and sell candles and have been asking for subcategories as a feature request.

  Scented Candles ( Category)

          Pillar Candles (Subcategory)

                 Sizes ( Subcategories)

                           Variations (Scents)

          Jar Candles (Subcategory)

                   Sizes ( Subcategories)

                           Variations (Scents)

Unscented Candles ( Category)

          Pillar Candles (Subcategory)

                 Sizes ( Subcategories)

                           Variations (Colors)
