Multiple small businesses at a single location (different partnerships required seperate accounts) considering using Square gift cards. All five of the businesses use Square for payment processing, but have different loyalty and/or gift card solutions that are not part of the Square system.
It is not cost effective to place individual gift card orders with Square for each business. We hoped that it would be possible to place an very large order of generic Square gift cards that could be used by any of the businesses on-site. Reviewed the Square support page, search the community forums and finally had to call customer service for clarification. It appears that there was not clear answer, but a follow-up call from cusotmer service while typing this thread.
The information on the FAQ page states that gift cards can be used at multple locations (if they are on the same Square account). The gift cards can also be reused (if the gift card balance reaches zero ir is manually cleared). However, gift cards are permanmently linked to each Square business account.
WORKAROUND / USAGE UPDATE: Square customer service provided additional clarification. New gift cards are not linked to any business until they are used for the first time. After the initial transaction, that card can only be used and reused by that business. But before that initial transaction, the cards unlinked. Not sure if anyone else had this question, but sharing this info to help save time.
