Modifying Modifiers in Square Online

We want our customers to be able to select new modifiers based on previously-selected modifiers online. I have an example that will explain what we are looking to do: Chicken is the menu item. The customer has the option of Baked, Grilled, or Fried. If the customer chooses Baked or Grilled, we want them to be able to add the order to their cart (Chicken: Baked or Chicken: Grilled) with no additional modifiers.

However, if the customer chooses Fried, we want them to select how they want it fried with the modifiers of either Original or Extra Crispy so that it reads (Chicken: Fried: Original or Chicken: Fried: Extra Crispy).

We do not want to give them the option of Original or Extra Crispy if they select Baked or Grilled. We also do not want to have to have three different items (Baked Chicken, Grilled Chicken, Fried Chicken) on the menu. We have a lot of variations that are dependent on other variations like this on our menu.

How can we set up this logic in Square Online? Would options or variations work? Those just seem to work like modifiers.... Please advise.

We would totally do that if we only had those few options. We offer substitutions at our restaurant in which some subs have seven butter flavor options.

So, if the customer subs a fried item with a boiled item that requires butter, they would see:

“no fries”

”no fries, add hush puppies”

”no fries, add cole slaw”

“no fries, add corn: original”,

“no fries, add corn: spicy”,

“no fries, add corn: honey garlic”,

“no fries, add corn: lemon pepper”

“no fries, add corn: Caribbean jerk”

”no fries, add corn: Cajun”

”no fries, add corn: plain/no butter”

and that’s just fries and corn.

Customers also have the option of subbing their fries with eggs (no fries: add egg: flavor1, etc), or sausage, or potatoes, which all require a butter selection, plus they can sub out their hushpuppies and coleslaw for sides with butter for a total of 84 possible combinations for one fried platter. That is not to mention our boiled platters, which also sub their sides for other sides with butter. That easily tops 200 variations.

It would be much better to have a separate box open up if they select a side requiring butter and the customer then selects the butter. It would be much more streamlined.
