Is the Square Terminal region specific?

I'm looking at buying a used Square Terminal from a seller on eBay. The description states it will only work for sellers in the US but I asked Square customer service if there would be a problem using a Square device in Canada if it was purchased from a US seller and the answer was no. But I have also seen a few comments on these message boards that imply that Square devices are region specific ie. one purchased in the US will not work within Canada. Does anyone have first hand experience with this who can give me a definitive answer? Thanks!

I'm sorry you saw/read some conflicting information. 

Cross-border card payments are unsupported with Square. This means that card transactions attempted outside of the country where you activated your Square account can’t be processed with Square and your Terminal should only be used in the country in which you purchased it.
