Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

I give my staff a discount on products but I do not want to allow a discount on travel size items.  Is there a way to mark them so they can not be discounted?

Re: How do I restrict all discounts on purchases of alcohol?

It sounds like you would like the ability to restrict specific items from discounts, @burrito 🌯
While this is not currently possible, you are able to select the categories and items that discounts apply to.

  1. I would first recommend creating a category from your Dashboard to house all of your alcoholic beverages in.

  2. Next, you'll create or edit a discount via your Discounts page.
While here, toggle ON the Discount rules option in the Automatic discount section:

  3. You'll want to select the Item or category option in the pop-up that appears here:

  4. Next, you can select all categories that you would like the discount to apply to.
Be sure not to select the category you created for your alcoholic beverages!

Please let us know if this isn't quite what you were looking to do, and we can dig in a bit more

Hi @salon208 — welcome to the seller community! ✌🏻

Thanks for surfacing this. Currently, we don't offer the option to restrict discounts on specific items, though I can see how this feature would be helpful for many businesses like yours.

I'll be sharing your suggestion with our Product Liaison team, who is constantly working to improve our products based on seller feedback. We'll certainly circle back with any other developments that may be useful.

Please keep in touch for updates and if you have any other questions, let us know!

This feature is really needed!

You're right, @mywinestop 🍷

Although the feature requested in this thread is not currently available, I wanted to try to provide a workaround that may work for some in the meantime. We'll update this thread if what y'all are looking for is introduced in the future. I did also recently bubble this thread directly to our product team.

2021 & still looking for a solution! My staff often forgets to 'undo' the Gift Card discount--for instance, someone purchases a $20 value gift card, but receive 10% off and only pay $18 for it. In the back office dashboard I can't even find the Gift Card (ordered gift cards through a Square partner).

It's been over 5 years since this thread was started, why is this not an option?

It's bizarre this feature does not exist.

The Verified Answer from Valentina is not helpful because the Automatic Discount toggle causes all items to then get the discount automatically, rather than permitting the discount to be applied.  We have to then remove it from items which we don't want to discount. I can't imagine a useful circumstance for ALWAYS automatically discounting an item or category.

For state-level, county-level, and city-level laws/ordinances regarding the restriction of discounting alcohol.... this... really... is a MUST-HAVE item for a point of sale solution. Square POS Sellers are literally breaking the law each time an alcoholic beverage is sold by our staff and a discount is accidentally applied to the entire ticket. While easy for the initial programmers to overlook the need, it's been years since requested and should really have been implemented by this point in time.

@burrito insane, right? There is such a lack of constructive communication with Square as they set their own agenda and don't seem to really take into account users, whether new or veteran, criticisms on what are seemingly critical items. Who am I? Someone who has tried to get this issue resolved for years to no avail. Also have been using the Square POS for my business for years, and was told basically at one point if I didn't like the system as it is that it was not a big deal if I didn't use it anymore.

Commenting so I can be added to this thread. I don't think Square understands what we need.

Create an Item Category Discount + a Customer Discount

When you setup a discount it is either Item OR Customer. There needs to be an option to combine the two.

Does anyone remember learning about overlapping circles in Geometry? In Square's options it is either one or the other. I want that intersection where the circles overlap.

@alikat72 - you said it perfectly. Disallow a discount on categories or items.

I don't want to give a discount on Event Tickets, But I want the discount on the Wine Bottles category. Why is this so hard for Square to understand?
