Square for Restaurants: Recipe/Ingredient Management

Square for Restaurants: Recipe/Ingredient Management

How has square inventory worked for you? I’m thinking about using it but I worry how it will work with items that use the same ingredients. Ex. Multiple dishes that use chicken. Would this work well with inventory management. If not what have you used that works? Thanks!

Re: Feature Request: Bundle items together as a single item, and pull from inventory individually

+1 on this request.

Currently running a retail basic blank apparel store.

I'd like to start selling custom printed T-shirts(both on/offline), while keeping inventory of my blanks.

I have an item with two variations.

E.g.:

Item: Great Gizmos

Variation 1: Gizmo Plain $4.00

Variation 2: Gizmo with Sauce $4.75

Inventory of Gizmos: 12

I need to track the inventory of total Gizmos regardless of which variation is sold.

Scenario:

Starting inventory = 12.

Customer "A" buys 2 Plain Gizmos.

Overall Gizmo Inventory is now 10 Gizmos.

Customer "B" buys 3 Gizmos with Sauce.

Overall Gizmo Inventory should now be 7.

However, within Item setup, there is an inventory per variation.

How do I set this up so that each variation sold tracks against the OVERALL item inventory?

Thanks.

Hi @dv1 - it sounds like you may want to be using modifiers, rather than variations, to account for the sauce that you're adding to your Gizmos. Variations are great for when you are selling multiple different versions of the same item, like different sizes of the same shirt.

Modifiers are better for sauces and other toppings, so that's what I'd recommend for your Gizmos here - this will keep all your Gizmos coming from the same inventory. You'll start by making sure that you have your Gizmo priced at $4. Then you'll want to head here, and select Create a Modifier Set; I'd recommend adding your sauce here as a $0.75 charge.

Let us know if any questions come up after you've had a chance to look into this!

How can you track inventory for multiple variations that use the same stock. For example, if we have 70 pretzels and we have one variation of buying a single pretzel or buy a 3 pack. The price of the 3 pack isn't simply just three of the single cost. How do you deduct the 3 pretzels from the total amount of pretzels so that the amount available for single pretzels syncs to that new total?

I have noticed similar questions from 4 years back and on, every time a square rep says that they are working on adding that feature. Is it added and I can't figure it out, or is it still not a feature that is available.

Given that everyone is mostly having to turn to online in current times, is this something that can be done quickly to help everyone out?

@VisMajorBrewing Another seller asked a similar question so I moved you to this thread.

I regret to say. Square's Inventory system does not support sharing stock between item variation. Each variation is considered it's own separate item and needs a stock amount.

You're right - it's been a long time since this feature was requested. Hopefully we can bring some good news to this thread in the near future.

You're right.  Thanks for clarifying for me.

Glad I was able to provide some clarity here, @dv1 - definitely reach back out if any other questions come up as you set up your Item Library!

Just want to add another voice to the choir about this. Being able to create composite items that are composed of differing amounts of other items would be INCREDIBLY helpful for all sorts of reasons. We sell food items that have multiple components. It would be awesome to track inventory of all of the components so that when we ran out of, say, soup, it would automatically become unavailable (particularly on our website, where the customer interacts with the menu directly!)

Further, being able to link modifiers to inventory items would likewise be just as valuable!
