Hello Weebly Community,
I’m here to share information about an important update to the following subscription services for those of you located in the European Union:
- Square Online plans
- Weebly plans
The change will go into effect for all sellers in the EU subscribed to these plans on 1st October, 2021.
What’s the update?
From 1st October 2021 onward, we will start charging VAT on our subscription services being provided in the EU if a valid VAT ID number is not provided.
The change applies to the following subscription products: Square Online plans, and Weebly plans.
Please provide us with your VAT ID number in your account settings by 1st October 2021. If we haven’t received a valid VAT number by 1st October 2021, we’ll start adding indirect tax to the subscription charge based on the EU rules .
For more information, please visit the corresponding EU country’s tax authorities website.
How to add VAT ID
To add your VAT ID, click on the Update Billing Information link on the Square Online Overview page/Weebly dashboard and enter your VAT ID in the field provided.

Hi everyone! There are two big questions that have come up so I'll provide answers for those here.
I don't have a VAT ID because I'm not a business. What does this mean?
This means you don't need to update your billing information, and we will start charging you VAT after October 1st.
I don't have a link in my dashboard to update my billing information, but I need to add my VAT ID. What do I do?
Go to the payment methods page of your account , remove your billing method using red delete icon, then add a billing for your services on the services page of your account. You'll be able to enter your VAT ID while adding in a card.

After doing the suggested, don't let me add a new card, whatever it is.
MESSAGE: "We encountered an error updating your billing information. Please use a different payment method or try again later."
Solution?

@Adam @Bernadette I've also received the e-mail and I don't understand what this VAT thing has to do with my website. Could you please explain what that fee is for and what amount can be expected?
The website I've created through Weebly is a personal gaming fansite and no business website, so I do not have a VAT number.
In the Netherlandsa you only get a VAT number when you have an official business and are registered at the Chamber of Commerce.
Because I couldn't reply to your email (not allowed) I have created a ticket on Weebly Support yesterday with case # 66201607 asking the same questions.
The automatic reply from Weebly says what it always says:
'We have received your request but please note that we are experiencing higher than normal volume and are working on responding to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience!'
I know how that will end because I'm waiting for an answer on another question for 2 years now, so please reply to us here. Thank you.

Hello Adam,
Thanks for your responses, but I think the big question people want to know is WHY, HOW MUCH and WHAT ON?
You repeat:
"I don't have a VAT ID because I'm not a business. What does this mean?
This means you don't need to update your billing information, and we will start charging you VAT after October 1st. "
Fine, so HOW MUCH and WHAT ON?
i.e.... the subscription of the website? .... so we pay 20 euros a month and you will charge say 7% on this....
or
If we run a E-Commerce Business you will charge VAT on every transaction we sell through the website.
or
BOTH
Or as people have pointed out they are NOT a BUSINESS and put no financial transactions through their site.
Will they be charged? What on?
Please provide some clarity... we are 23+ days away from the 1st of October, yet know nothing, other than we will be charged money on something!!!!
Its not fair....
Many thanks
James.

However, there is still a lot of lack of information on this topic by support.
Thanks.

As everyone knowes who has tried to add a new card after removing the previous card it's not working. If I rememeber correctly the support said you have to add the new card forst and then remove the old one. I'm not sure that works either, I know there's always some kind of problem resulting in error mesages when trying to change your billing information in any way.
This is handled really, really bad on Weebly's part - rolling out information to all customers on filling out VAT number and then lots of problems and no adequat support!

**UPDATE 9/9/21- we have sent out a new email to everyone with the updated link.
I'm sorry to hear you all are having trouble with this error. If removing and adding the card is not working for you, please reach out to the support team directly. The email queue is a running a bit behind, but shouldn't take too much longer for these specific vat questions.
You can reach the team by scrolling to the bottom of our Help Center and clicking the contact us button. Once you see the automated chat window try typing something like "speak with a rep" to be directed to the teams available to your account.

Thank you for your clarifications, @Adam!

However, we still cannot understand why you will start charging us VAT after October 1st, since (if we understand correctly) no selling = no business = no profit = no value added = no VAT.
Could you elaborate on that?

Will definitely try to find a different provider if the subsciption increases.
bad move for weebly, plenty of cheaper and reliable providers on the market.

Update: removing/adding a new card seems to have done the job. Is there a way we can check our VAT number in the account section ?
@Bernadette Got the new email with link to add VAT. Said link works.
Except Weebly then refuses our Belgian VAT number, which is perfectly correct (BE+10 numbers). I tried without the "BE", not working either.
I also would like to know what this VAT number is for.
All products sold through our website are already VAT included, which is paid quarterly to the BE government.
Thanks!

Hi @odegam The VAT update is for Weebly services you purchase. Not for items you sell through your online store.
It sounds like you are entering the correct information, but unfortunately I do not have a way to verify why the error is showing. Can you please reach out to our support team when you get a chance?

Hi @armagan That is correct. I do not see any reason why the VAT tax would apply to your account.
