I am a criminal defense attorney. What can I do to better protect myself from client's getting a refund after I've performed the work. This recently happened to me.

@rhettspno Due to the EMV liability shift, the best protection you can have is to have a card physically present and use the dip/tap pay with the card in person. These are the only transactions where you have some protection from chargebacks. This isn't actually square's policy but visa/MC a few years back.
I would definitely be, no card in person, no get out of jail.
Here is a link for more info and to order the reader if you wanted to. You can pair it to your phone also.

It really isn't wise to stiff your defense attorney!
Hope this helps.
