How to quickly locate original payment to issue a refund a card transaction

I am looking for a quick method to locate an original payment made by card (debit or credit) in order to process a refund. I do not collect customer information and do not provide printed receipts. I have many transactions of similar $ amounts that all occur in a short time period and it takes too long to scroll through the list of transactions in an attempt to visually locate a specific customer's original transaction. 

Can the customer tap their card on the Square Card Reader to locate their original payment?

The option to tap the card in order to find the transaction is definitely a Feature Request, but you can search the transactions by the PAN of the card. So if your customer is present, just search the last 4 digits of the card in order to find the transaction for a refund.
