Credit Card on file updated to incorrect account

I had an issue where a client saved their credit to file for daily invoices and we moved them to autocharge. The problem was that they somehow managed to add their credit card onto an account that wasn't theirs. I've been trying to work through tech support to resolve this issue, but I keep being told that their profile was 'updated' to merge with another account. Has anybody else had a similar issue with credit card info being tied to a wrong account? I don't know what 'update' they are talking about, except that it wasn't something that would have been done intentionally on our end or our client's, and we need to figure out how never replicate it.
