Can I sell digital items with Square Online?

[The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Digital products?]

I am brand new, I've been searching for posts about this but many of them are old.

I was wondering if we can sell digital products through square, and if so, is there a download option? Or do we have to go through a third party / send manually?

Hey @meljen-

Thanks for posting in the Seller Community!

Yes, with Square Online you can list digital items for sale:

You can then provide the digital file for download via email, as we do not have an automated digital file send process after they make their purchase. You will have to manually send them their digital file for download, so make sure their email address is noted. Let me know if you have any questions about this! 🌟

I just want to offer a digital download for free on my online store. Can I share the download link in the item description and remove the ordering functionality altogether? I want to avoid having to manually send the digital download later.

Hey @bibraver-

If the item is free and you're not anticipating payment for it, then yes, you can list the link to the download in the item description.

Then you would not have to send the attachment in an email later.

Ok thanks @Isabelle_! But how can I remove the purchasing button and remove the cart process entirely for a customer since the link is already in the description? I don't want them to go through the unnecessary steps to get the link.

Ahhh @bibraver

I see what you're saying now. In that case you can use use a button or text link and choose the digital file option when making the link. That will let people just click the link or button and download the file immediately without going through any kind of checkout process.

There's no way to completely get rid of the checkout/purchase button. I guess as a workaround you could just make a web page without any items, and in the information about your business you could just include the link to the download. If you'd like more insight on how to do this, please give our Support Team a call so they can walk you through it. Thank you.

I am a VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMER! Having to manually send digital products is a MAJOR PAIN! I've been asking for A YEAR now that you guys allow me to upload the product automatically in Weebly so that I do not have to send out literally hundreds of digital files a month.

This is eCommerce, you guys! This makes no sense! When are you going to allow us to do this!!!

Hello,

I was pointed to this thread from another thread. Just letting the admins know that I also need a way to upload digital files for sale. At this point specifically .docx, .pdf, .wav .mp3 .mpeg .avi .xlsx .pptx I know you're working on the feature. Thanks.

This needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY. I have to manually email digital files. I just sent 70 PDFs manually! It makes no sense that an online eCommerce provider does not do this. It will cause you to lose customers.

Think about Kodak. They were pioneers in digital photography, but refused to make investments in that arena due to their thought that film would always be used. They are no longer in business.

I’m also needing to sell a pdf file that the customer can download upon purchase and automate the process. Instead of me having to manually email a file to customers.

When is this feature going to be available?

I have read through the whole thread and I see many unsatisfied Square sellers.

Most sales platforms have this feature. Why is Square behind on this? Especially, during a time when people are creating and selling digital content.

The digital sale needs to be automated and direct. So customers can pay and download right in the Square store, as soon as they purchase the file. We shouldn’t have to manually send an email for buyers to download a file.

I rather not have to use my Etsy account.

Square/Weebly, make this happen quickly. You will lose seller accounts’ business, if you don’t expedite this feature.

How do I know I will have their email address?  Are they automatically prompted, since it's digital to input that information?  Or how do I make sure I will have the correct information?

Hi @millermorning great question! The emails are automatically collected during checkout. 🙂

"we have a Square Online Store powered by Weebly".

But Weebly has the option to provide a digital download so why has this not yet happened? Is there any time scale update to this?

Seems very strange that in a age and time where digital downloads are all that my business is currently able to offer, that Square hasn't made this more of a priority. All I can see is that they've prioritized delivery options, whilst the rest of us are left to send send huge numbers of download links to our customers. My life is hard enough trying to keep a business afloat without the extra email traffic i'm dealing with during the Coronavirus.

Anything?

Having to manually send digital products is not acceptable especially in times like these. Most businesses are depending on online sales....Please make this a priority Square!

Nothing yet, I think I'm going to have to move my store over to another site... It seems counterproductive to have an online store for digital downloads that I have to email out myself.

@Cheer-Haven I hope you find a solution as well... I was really enjoying the ease of my weebly site too ... 😞

I'm with you... If this doesn't get priority soon, I will have to make a change aswell.

Do love Weebly but its just not working out for my digital downloads:(

We appreciate your sincerity here, @Cheer-Haven. We likewise appreciate you adding your voice and context to your business on how this feature specifically would help in the long run. I am going to go ahead and tag our Product Teams here for visibility.

We look to have a positive update to share soon. Thanks for your continued patience!

So Joe,

My question is WHY the Product Team was not tagged in the first place with something this important to your customers???

I am so sick of this.
