Feature Request: Automatically add a bottle deposit

Feature Request: Automatically add a bottle deposit

I found the feature has been requested, but it doesn’t seem like it has been implemented. Since it may have gotten lost in the shuffle, I’ve decided to bring it up again. It looks like it has been requested since at least May 2016.

If the cashier selects a soda bottle, can we have the ability to automatically select the 5 cent deposit, as a non-taxable add-on? We have many cashiers, and the line of customers is often long, and I don’t want to burden them with having to remember to select the deposit as a separate item.

Thank you for reading/listening :).

Feature Request: Automatically add a bottle deposit - or charge CRV in California

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Bottle Deposit

We are opening a cidery and will be selling bottles of hard cider. In Iowa you have to charge a .05 bottle deposit. Is there a way to have this charge automatically added to the sale of a bottle without adding it to the price? i would like it to show on the receipt as a .05 deposit but not have to remember to add to each sale. I guess it would be like a tax but it isn't a percentage and I don't see where I can change a tax from percentage to $.

Thanks for any help.

Hi there, @EUPHORIA - no update on this front just yet, but I would love to get some more clarity from you on the scenario you described.

Would you mind providing a bit more context? - are you simply looking to refund your customers who used a bottle service?

I will keep an eye out for your response!

Yes exactly @Joe   We need to keep track of the deposits,  adding them to cans, and milk bottles or growlers.  right now we just include it in the total price and payout returns via the cash register payouts but this does not easily track them.

Hi @Joe. It looks like this has been an ongoing topic for a couple of years based on other threads. I want to register as someone else requesting this. Properly addressing the container deposit issue really is a must and should be pushed up on Square's development priority list. Thanks.

Adding my firm in Maine that wants Square to add bottle deposit capability.

Would love to have this as a feature, it's a huge pain to do manually, widely necessary and seems easy peasy to implement.

Following other threads and seeking info on updates to Square for collecting bottle deposits on beverages in states that require this be done.  Additionally, refunding those deposits so there is a clear trail of all of this activity. Employee error will be a big problem.

Open to discussing in further depth to help develop.  Thank you!!

Hey @valclapp,

I moved your post to an existing thread for this question.

We update threads as features are released so we'll be sure to update the thread if anything changes.

In the meantime there are some workarounds posted here.

i have asked this question as well, and they said "great point, I've passed it on"... obviously, it has been a long time concern.

For me, it is about pickup/delivery. If we don't include in price (and then it's taxed) then what customer would ADD money to their order (would you like to modify a 6-pack of beer by adding 30 cents, or a bottle of wine = +0.15 ??) why woud someone do this.

It's easier to resolve for inperson purchase (still an extra step) but online delivery / pickup / curbside is my current issue .

If anyone has figured out any sort of work around, I'd love to hear/read it!  Thanks

Agreed!!!  Seeing as how this topic thread started in 2017, I just can't understand why this option hasn't been added yet.  Especially since almost EVERYONE has had to pivot to selling beer/wine in cans and bottles since COVID.  Square, PLEASE make this a priority so your customers can be in compliance with CA (and other states') law.

We are in Canada and also needing to add bottle deposit feature, so it is not taxed.

Seeing a lot of people requesting a similar issue so want to echo it so we can hopefully highlight the need for this change in the backend. Keeping it separate to be tracked is critical.

Thanks
