how do customers load credit cards onto their phones to use with contactless readers?

I have a new contactless reader.  It's great with chip cards.  But the pictures I've seen online of people using the reader for non-chip cards show their phones waving over the reader.  How do you load the card you want to use into your phone? 

I use my phone at Starbucks to pay for things by loading a gift card on their app.  But I can't figure out how my customers are supposed to load their cards on their phones to pay me...?

It really depends on what type of phone and contactless payment method they have available to them. 

While your Square Contactless and Chip Card Reader accepts every type of NFC and Contactless style payment, the three most common are listed below with some articles to help:
