CASH TIP

CASH TIP

Having an option to add tip on cash payments,  just like with a card payment! Have a tip screen after the payment is finished. It is causing issues when small business like myself have to rely on tips in with my income so I can get approved to idk… Buy a house, get any type of loan. Get it together square. We literally pay for everything separately, the least you could do Is update some features. THANKS

Re: CASH TIP

We'd also like the ability to add tips per cash transaction. We currently do a 5pm "close" for the next shift so we need the ability to know what cash tips are counted before 5pm and after 5pm. It's a bit frustrating to calculate the tips correctly.

Re: Checks written over the amount charged.....

Welcome to the Community, @jrk7382, thanks for posting.

I imagine this scenario comes up if your customer is adding a tip to their bill, correct? As opposed to paying the exact amount.

Currently there isn't the option to add tips on "Other Tender" payments, such as checks, but definitely see how this would be useful for reporting. As a workaround, I've seen other sellers suggest here to create a variably priced item - meaning you can add the price at the time of sale - called "TIp." This allows you to enter the amount separately from your total charge.

Hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions.

Re: Can we account for tip jar cash tips in the Square daily sales reports?

I also discovered that there is a way to record cash in / out of the drawer.  It is in an odd place, under Reports (which is also where you Start and End a drawer to total it out).  That is usefull for something like "Hey Joe - Here's $20, go get paper towels!"  You could use it for tips, but I prefer the method we are talking about here because then you have a record of tips seperate from petty cash kinds of things that you would have a receipt for (e.g. Joe spends $12.45 and you put the receipt + $7.55 back into the drawer using the cash In option).  But you could use it for tips if it is a small shop.

@Ron - Great suggestion! 🙌  As a follow up, did you create a "Tip" item as well?

@karl_f - You could make sure that there are no taxes enabled for this item. Also, you could also ring it in as "Other Tender" if you'd prefer. Alternatively, some sellers who use Cash Drawer Management also use the Paid In/ Paid Out feature to record tips.

We set up a TIP "category" and ring our jar tips up there. Hope that helps.

Re: What is the proper way to enter a cash tip?

Hello! While I know this would be an incredibly useful feature for many merchants, we don't offer an official way to record tips for cash transaction. I have seen some merchants who use cash drawer management use the "Paid In" function to provide a record for these transactions.

You can learn more about that feature here: https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5152-cash-drawer-management.

I'm happy to pass along your suggestion to our product liaison team. We're constantly working to improve our payment features based on the feedback we get from our sellers.

When I am recording a cash sale and my clients total is $20 and they give me $25, is there a way to record the additional $5.00 payment being made? When I am doing my bank deposits and it links to Quickbooks, I have to manually enter all tips that are received cash.

It also does not show the additional $5.00 on my square reports.

Hi @xxdanaxx — It looks like another seller had the same question, and received an answer. Check out this thread for more details.

@Spenser,

  1. Is this an item that has had ANY discussion in Square's development pipeline. I would find this extremely valuable. I'm a developer and was originally looking at pointing a new client in Square's direction for their POS operations, however without this option, and also being able to sign for an "Other" payment type leaves me dead-in-the-water.
  2. Is there a portal that Square has set up for the community to request features and see the status of those feature requests?

@sose While there has been discussion around this feature, it's not something that is currently on the prioritized road map at the moment.

That can definitely change due to seller advocacy, so we'll be sure to let our Product Team know about your interest in this feature as well.

All Feature Requests that come through the Seller Community are tracked and noted by our Product Teams directly.

I think adding a tip option for cash and check is something many people would find helpful. I have only been using square for a few weeks and have needed this option as well. I also use QuickBooks and my data uploads every night. So if I charge a customer $30.00 and they write the check for $36.00 you're saying to create another "item" and ring that up for the amount of the tip? Because if I just create a line item for "Tips", square thinks this item is a serivce and will record it as such in Quickbooks. The problem with that is now I have to make and additional step in my quickbooks to make sure that all the "tips" are going into the same account.

I was surprised that to read this thread and learn that not only is there no option, but that it isn't even in the pipeline. 😞  If you already allow tips for credit cards, why isn't this a proirity for all forms of payment? This thread seems to have a lof of views.

Hi there @tl6734

It's true, currently adding a tip option for other tenders is just a feature request.

I definitely want to share your feedback with our Product Team but I don't have experience with bookkeeping or accounting and I am unclear why having it recorded in Square Point of Sale would be helpful.

Can you tell me more about how you usually record your sales and tips? In the past, when a customer paid for a $30.00 service and wrote a check for $36.00, how would you record it?

Please let me know - I'd love to share your feedback. 🙂

So right now, when Square syncs my daily sales into Quickbooks everyday:

Since credit card sales give you the option to add a tip, that data is sent to QB as a split transaction. So it will list the $30 service as "Sqaure Item" and it lists the $6 tip as "Square Tip". That is how it is already set up from square. But with cash or check I can record the $30 service and add another service item for the $6 tip. The problem with that is that both items get synced to QB as "Square Item", basically telling QB that both items were actually services. So i maunally go into QB and update each transaction paid with a check or cash, so that it's split between "Square item" and "Square Tip". That way in QB I can easily look at the "Square Tips" account and know exactly how much of my income was tips VS service. As it is right now, i either have to maually go in and adjust each transaction not paid by CC, or leave it alone and just not be able to count on my tip account in QB being accurate.

I included this image so you could see how Square sends over the info to QB on a credit card transaction.

@tl6734 - that is eye opening - thanks so much for detailing this out!

I can definitely see why this is important for you in operating your business. I am definitely escalating this to our Product Team.

Just registered to comment here specifically to lend some support to this person's request.  I am a bookkeeper for a salon and this is a real issue.  We need to be able to account for tips on a cash transaction in the same way that we are allowed to do it for credit transactions.  When our salon owner deposits the days receipts, it doesn't match our square transactions because of the added cash tips.  Therefore, we can't sync our Square with our Quickbooks Online because of the massive amount of backend work we need to do in order to account for the extra tip cash.

Our solution at the moment is to balance each week of our Square transactions separately to our bank deposits and then hand entering them into our Quickbooks online.

It seems like the cash transactions having the same options for tips as the credit ones wouldn't be too much extra work?

Thanks for listening.
