Sub Categories

I know this has been mentioned in the past.  I know you can use variations and modifiers and that you can have site subcategories online.  But I am a Pizza/Deli along with a Retail store.

I know you are looking for reasons why subcategories would be helpful so here I go.  For instance in my store I track cost in QuickBooks under major categories such as Grocery, Meat Dept, Lotto, Pizza/Deli etc. I use these as my major Roll up categories- See example of Grocery

Grocery-

   Produce

        Weighed

            items

        Non Weighed

             items

   Candy

       Candy Bars

            items

        Novelty

            items

        Truffles

             items

   Local Items

       Maple Syrup

           items

       Private label Spices

          items

   Pet products

      Food/Treats

         items

      Toys

         items

    Dairy

      Cheese

          items

      Milk

        items

You get the idea, when I break them down into individual categories then I have to export to Excell, rearrange my rows and add roll them up manually.

We are also Using Square for Restaurants to integrate our online Menu.  But I have to have all the menu categories in seperatly so they show on the Menu correctly and I can have correct tickets print to the kitchen but when it comes to reporting it would be nice to be able to roll up all the menu categories so I can see what the Restaurant did.  I know that is possible with Restaurants Plus but since we have both we need the retail tracking of Retail Plus.  So far I have been able to get everything to work together; with some workarounds, we have only had it a week.  But I do see reporting as an issue moving forward.

Thanks

Re: can you make subcategories

If you have at least one other category, you can create a subcategory within your Square Online website.

Head to your Square Online overview page > Items > Site Categories > click the + button next to a category.

After saving your changes, the new category will appear nested underneath the category you just selected on the Items > Site Categories page. Learn more about categories here.

I hope this helps, @hishersbling - and welcome to the Seller Community!

Re: can you make subcategories

Hi @coppermug84 👋 Thanks for reaching out! Happy to have you join us here on the Seller Community. Welcome!

We do not have any current plans to implement a sub-category system. We feel that the implementation of Variations and Modifiers offers these same features of potential sub-categories, and allow for trackable iterations of existing items.

We would love to hear more about what you would use sub-categories for! How specifically would sub-categories be beneficial to your business? - what kind of items do you sell?

I will keep an eye out for your response!

That works for a website.  We have a physical store that we use square as our POS.  So weebly doesn't help.  Hope your solution helps others though.

It doesn't work for those of us with established websites, though. Importing my Square inventory without major issues hasn't been possible.

Would Square be making subcategories within categories anytime soon? This would be so useful for reports, because that way I could make a report on that one big category instead of checking each category.

So I actually don't mean subcategories within the categories I mean a category that's bigger than the category itself. The reason I ask for this is because sometimes I have items that become unavailable through the square Weebly website. And variations cannot be made unavailable on the website. So each item has to be its own. And then listed under a category. But I would like another category that is bigger than that category to be available to use So that I can create a report without checking so many categories.

Thanks for the prompt reply, @coppermug84! Ah, I think I am closer to understanding what you are looking for.

At this time, a feature like the one you are describing is not available. I a more than happy to pass your feedback from this thread along to our Product Teams as a Feature Request, however. Should anything come down the pipeline in terms of updates, we will be able to reach back out to you here and let you know.

Cheers!

Why @ would use Sub Categories @Joe :

I have a Candle Business as you can tell, we have about 126 scents which is more than allowed to be uploaded to a Square Website (120 Variations max)

Not only do we sell Scented candles but we also have different Types of candles for different occasions and specialty candles etc.

What I wanted to do was have Category : Scented Candles, Sub Category by size or type.

here is an example:

  • Category : Scented Candles

    Sub Categories:

  1. 28 oz Jars ( variants by Scent )
  2. 16 oz Jars ( variants by Scent )
  3. 8 oz Jars ( variants by Scent )
  4. 2x3 Pillars ( variants by Scent )
  5. 2x6 Pillars ( variants by Scent )
  6. 3x3 Pillars ( variants by Scent )
  7. 3x6 Pillars ( variants by Scent )
  8. 3x9 Pillars ( variants by Scent )
  9. 6x6 Pillars ( variants by Scent )
  10. 6x9 Pillars ( variants by Scent )
  • Category : Unscented Candles

     Sub Categories

  1. 2x3 Pillars (variants by Color)
  2. 2x6 Pillars (variants by Color)
  3. 3x3 Pillars (variants by Color)
  4. 3x6 Pillars (variants by Color)
  5. 3x9 Pillars (variants by Color)
  6. 6x6 Pillars (variants by Color)
  7. 6x9 Pillars (variants by Color )

Currently I have all the scents under something like:

Scented candles Category: 28oz Jars : Variations (the Scent)

By doing it this way I am unable to add pictures to each Variation or a description of the scent and color.  Having all the different sizes as a Category would have too many Main Categories to scroll through at Check out if I do not have the SKU in the system yet.  Sometimes I have for example in the variations Scented Candle/ 28 oz/ Regular  with a Price for items I may have missed or is a NEW scent to see how it sells which we have to look up through Square Stands Item Library.

Hope this helps why a Sub - Category would be needed.

I want to divide my products by supplier and then divide that suppliers products into categories. So what I'd like is subcategories under several main categories..
Is that possible?

It is possible to have subcategories within a Square Online store, @Candlestore. In your Square Online overview page, go to Items > Categories, then drag a category beneath another one and to the right a little bit to make it a subcategory of that category. You can read about that and more in our support article on items and categories within Square Online.

Super Seller

@AdamB ... Thank you for the information about the Square Online availability of Sub categories but currently we are using Square for Retail at our physical location only and have another provider for our online website and store front.

If you can do this for Squares online stores, why can it not be implemented into Square for Retail or Square POS?
