My last name changed in 2015, but why can I not change it in my account?

I went ahead and merged your post to an existing thread where other Square Sellers have discussed this topic as well. We merge duplicate conversations together to keep like comments in one place, and to make it easier for others to find the thread in the future. 

 

At this time, the ability to edit the Owner's name listed on a Square account is a feature request. To learn more about how feature requests work, please see this post from one of our Seller Community Moderators. 

 

In the meantime, keep an eye out for any updates in our Seller Community.

Thank you, Kassi. I have seen threads and comments about this issue going back years. It would be very good to see Square actually address this issue!

It's been a week, and the only progress is to move my post to a mass thread about name changes. This thread is FULL of Square account owners looking to change their names. Instead of merging threads, let's see some actual action on this issue!

It's been a month and a half since this reply from Kassi. I have seen multiple messages from Community members in that time, which then just get merged into the existing threads to languish, unanswered, as usual.

 

Your users want the ability to change their Account Owner names, and this is a basic functionality that all other banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions offer to their users. Do something about this.

Hi there, @TigerTorreArt - thanks for jumping in here and bumping this request up. This has been a long-standing Feature Request and we recognize that it is highly anticipated and desired by our Sellers.

 

As Community moderators, we are not privy to specific timeline launches. Again, as soon as we have information to share in regards to potential account owner change ability, we will reach out to everyone here and update accordingly. 

How utterly unsurprising, and yet still disappointing, that this thread has been marked solved, with a Best Answer that is not an answer at all. Creating a new account is NOT A SOLUTION.

Hi @TigerTorreArt - thanks for adding your voice in support of this feature. As we have stated above, this type of account ownership edits and name change abilities are yet to be available - and being Community Moderators, we are not privy to specific launch times or potential features.

Well apparently needing to take my business elsewhere is what I’ll need to do. PayPal charges about the same fees and has similar options for payment processing. Additionally, to set up an account with them, all we had to do was provide our email address, no extra account owner BS.

 

I was explained by Square when our nonprofit changed management that the previous “owner” had to set up the account with their social security number, so that’s what they don’t want to/can’t change the owner. PayPal does it right, with no weird personal data for business functions. Until you can get this figured out, Bye Square.

Not sure if this thread is still active, but I got married and changed my last name, so the Owner name is outdated as the last name is my maiden name that I no longer go by.  I am not setting up a new account because I need the history and all my info to remain the same (clients, services, transaction history, etc.).  There must be a way to address this issue without having to set up a new account, that is preposturous.  If I call Customer Service, can they do it on the back end?

Hi there, @Studio16 - thanks for reaching out. As you may have read in previous answers to this thread, Square does not offer a way to edit owner or owner name on accounts for security purposes. This is a highly sought after Feature Request that may see some edits down the road.

I'm in the same boat and it's really crazy that we can't change our last names. We have all appropriate and legal documentation, there's literally zero liability on your end.
